Stampede Revisited @ Calgary 2011

Stampede is long gone, but I still have some pictures and stories unposted. So let’s revisit some of the highlights.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate) started their first royal tour together in Canada. One of the stops was Calgary, so they got a chance to drive by crowds of happy cowboys and cowboy girls with cameras just before the parade started. I snapped a shot.

Most of the time they spent in Canada they were not as anti-social as at “parade drive by”. They took their time to shake hands with kids and seniors, smile and engage in conversations with excited Canadians.

Here is Calgary Skyline from Stampede Grounds.

Big events are accompanied by shows every day of Stampede. Here is opening of the Chuckwagon races.

And some highlights from Stampede Rodeo.

As I was standing in “press only” box taking pictures of the race, I noticed a familiar face next to me –  Adrian Grenier, waiting for his chance to get on stage and promote his new movie “Teenage Paparazzo”.  The movie is about a 13 year old little paparazzo, Austin. The screening of the movie was in Glenbow Museum in Calgary next day. I did not go, but did I mention Adrian Grenier was standing next to me???!  Here are some pictures I took while trying to not feel like a paparazzo.

Press Only @ Calgary Stampede 2011

Somehow I ended up at Chuckwagon races again. (I hear that’s what happens at Stampede, you never know where you will end up). The races started, I had two beers, and pretend like you are reading the rest in slow motion:

I opened up my camera bag, got the biggest lens I have out, opened a side pocket, took out my dusty NYC press pass, sat for about few minutes thinking, got up and walked towards “Press Only” area..Flashed my press pass, explained that I am from New York and I am making a story about Calgary Stampede. They explained to me that I had to call ahead blah blah but then somehow I talked my way inside!!! And there I am standing there, looking into my viewfinder ..and instead of taking pictures, thinking how awesome I must look standing there in press only. Whohooooooo to Calgary Stampede!

This is the picture I took when I woke up from my dream, only to realize that it is not a dream and I better start shooting:) Ooops!

Chuckwagon Races @ Calgary Stampede 2011

“Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair..”

Here is to my first Stampede!! Yeeeehhaaaw!!! Cowboy hat – check! First favourite country song – check! First chuckwagon races – YES!

And what is better place to experience it all if not at the place where it all began – Calgary Stampede, The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth(that’s what they say). In 1923, the founding visionary of the Stampede, Guy Weadick convinced a number of working ranches to enter their authentic chuckwagons and roundup crews in the very first Rangeland Derby. And they have been racing ever since!

Thirty six wagons race every night in nine heats of four wagons each. Line-ups remain the same for the first four nights.

After first round, the wagons are all re-drawn into heats based on their total running time for the Stampede. And again they race over the next four nights.

The Aggregate Champion is crowned after eight nights of racing. Semi-Final comes on a day nine and determines the final four.

Showdown Sunday – the championship heat for the final four drivers. They race for a chance to win the title and claim $100,000.

And as we ride into the sunset, I hope I visit Stampede again!

Food Junk @ Calgary Stampede 2011

Calgary Stampede becomes pretty much the largest food court full of outrageous and fun food combinations. I have not tried all of them, but I tried to take pictures of most:

Wiggle Chips, Deep Fried Oreo(!!!??!!), Dipped in Chocolate Frozen Bananas, FRIED Cheesecake..

Corn dogs are Yummy. Its like hot dog in a donut on a stick! Yum. Poutine, Chicken Strips, Onion Rings and French Fries.

Burritos n’NACHOS, Tacos, Hot Wisconsin Cheese!

Sausage Haus, Colossal ONION!

Monster Dogs – they are indeed Monster, I have a picture of myself eating it…but its too embarrassing to post here:)

Good old Pennsylvania Dutch Funnel Cakes and SLUSH ZONE!! (love the guy in front of it, what a cutie)

I am just happy I am starting a 35 day yoga challenge at Yoga Santosha on Monday. My body needs serious detoxing after Stampede.

P.S. Here is the cutest couple for you on a WestJet ride across the Stampede grounds! I wonder if they would want to sign up for my DATE Night photoshoot!
